inspiring minds, building communities, transforming lives

·          Low-income students enter kindergarten on average 6 months behind higher-income peers in their reading, vocabulary and school readiness. Though they learn at the same rate as their classmates during the school year, they also tend to fall about 3 months further behind in reading skills each summer, so that the cumulative gap can reach as high as 2.5 years by 5th grade.

·          On average, Horizons students tend to improve 3 months in reading skills each summer.

·         Nationally recognized data show that the biggest factor in the "achievement gap" between low-income children and their middle-class peers is learning loss during the summer months.

·         Horizons students are far more likely to graduate from high school and attend college than they would be without the strong foundational support of Horizons.

·         On average, students enrolled in Horizons at Harley return at a rate of 85% year to year.

·         All of our children learn to swim, an important life skill that saves lives and builds confidence.

·         Horizons provides a safe and powerful community experience to children and youth who might otherwise spend summers on the streets or in front of the television.

·         Horizons at Harley is part of a national network of 19 program sites representing 10 states in the nation and serving thousands of students.

·         Horizons National (http://www.horizonsnational.org/) received the 2010 Excellence in Summer Learning Award from the National Summer Learning Association (http://www.summerlearning.org/).

·         Horizons earned recognition from the Wallace Foundation as one of the premier summer learning programs in the nation.
