Curiosity, Creativity, and Community: A Joyful Start to Our STEAM Weeks
Dear Horizons Families and Supporters,
This week, our program came alive with the energy of exploration as we launched our first of two STEAM-themed weeks—and what a week it was! From the moment students arrived on Monday, there was a renewed sense of curiosity in the air as classrooms transformed into laboratories, studios, and innovation hubs.
Throughout the week, students dove into hands-on learning experiences that sparked questions, inspired wonder, and built real-world skills.
In Engineering Challenges, our students explored the mechanics of force and motion while building pinball machines and catapults out of recycled materials. Each prototype came with its own surprises—and every challenge was met with perseverance and teamwork.
In Ooey Gooey Science, our youngest learners experimented with chemical reactions, from bubbling lava lamps to fizzy concoctions. Their excitement was contagious, and their scientific thinking began to shine.
Medical Explorers gave our 2nd graders an inside look at how the human body works, while our middle school students participated in one of our favorite traditions: Splinting and Casting Day, led by residents from the University of Rochester. Students wrapped limbs and practiced empathy—seeing how science, health, and helping others go hand in hand.
Meanwhile, Nature Detectives took to the woods and meadows of our campus with magnifying glasses in hand, learning to observe the natural world like true scientists. And in Robotics, middle schoolers designed circuits and programmed Ozobots, bringing their code to life on the classroom floor.
On Thursday, we took our learning beyond the classroom with a field trip to the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Whether they were exploring the wonders of space, marveling at physics exhibits, or launching balls through the kinetic sculpture, our students connected their classroom experiences to real-world applications. Thank you to our staff and volunteers who made this adventure possible.
We ended our week with our Friday Huddle, a favorite tradition that brings us together in celebration. Students performed, presented their work, and reflected on what they’ve learned—and the joy in the room was undeniable. These moments remind us just how powerful learning can be when it’s rooted in joy, belonging, and opportunity.
You can see highlights from our week in our Week 5 Huddle Slideshow.
To our families, thank you for entrusting us with your children and being part of this learning journey.
To our supporters, your generosity makes it possible for us to create these joyful, meaningful experiences every single day. You are helping students grow not only as learners, but as leaders, friends, and changemakers.
With gratitude and excitement for the week ahead,
