Horizons Saturday School - Week 4

11.20.21

Hi Everyone,

In our final Saturday School before the Thanksgiving break, students were able to work in the Harley Greenhouse on a planting project and play a little bit of Indoor Soccer.

Check out some highlights from this weekend…

This week Miss Lisa, Harley’s own Food and Farm Educator introduced the students to planting. Having worked with Horizons since 2012, Miss Lisa helps develop a sense of environmental stewardship in children. Spring may seem like a long time away as we move towards the colder winter months, but now is the perfect time to plant bulbs. Students not only planted at school but also got to begin their own mini garden, talking home their own daffodils. Here in the picture below, our first and second graders enjoy their creations, although unfortunately I’m not sure it can be willed to grow faster, Matthew!

Students also got to learn a variety of new soccer moves during Indoor Soccer. Using foam balls in the still brand new Peckham Wellness Center, we practiced the scissors, the drag back, juggling and even progressed to some 1v1 games. The key aspect of teaching elementary aged students the game, is to ensure that they consistently have a ball at their feet and are encouraged to take risks. As with most things, repetition of the technique develops the skill. In the picture below Javian, Sarah, Carason and Zahmir get to work on building their skills.

The connection between Harley and Horizons is so deeply important. This week Miss Kelly wanted to use a hands-on playdough activity to improve spelling. Step to the plate, Ms. Joslyn and Mrs. Moore (elementary teachers here at Harley) who not only made the playdough from scratch, but also made individual bags for every Saturday School student. This was especially important as it can’t be shared during the ongoing pandemic. Here is Zamiyah having a little fun with it.
