Horizons Saturday School - Week 1

Hi Everyone,

Horizons Saturday School (HSS) for the 2021-2022 academic year kicked off this weekend. There were 28 students on campus for a morning of academics and enrichment. HSS is made possible through the generous support of the Konar Foundation and Feinbloom Supporting Foundation.

Saturday School is an extension of The Horizons Student Enrichment Program at The Harley School. These programs provide scaffolded support to students throughout the school year. The fall session runs Saturday mornings from October 30 - December 11,  followed by spring session on Saturday mornings March - April, and full-day Horizons summer learning 5 days a week July - August 2022. We are proud to support our community with additional opportunities to learn through Horizons Saturday School.

Check out some highlights from this weekend…

Harley Middle School teacher, Doug Gilbert, designed a wonderful makerspace activity. After scavenging cardboard, grade 7 & 8 students were tasked with designing a cardboard chair in one hour that could support their weight. Students learned about engineering, teamwork, and deadlines. They used strong geometric shapes and basic tools, and collaborated quickly and effectively in teams to construct their chairs.

Essential in all Horizons work is our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) center. Emotional health is the critical foundation for learning, and we ensure that students have access to consistent SEL. The work is conducted primarily in social circles. The circles are designed to build community by focusing on a specific topic that encourages empathy, sharing and building trust. Miss Merriam is pictured here working with a group of students in grades 1 and 2 as they learn about self-regulation.

Academics are an essential part of the morning, each student receives dedicated tutoring time. Students are encouraged to bring in their homework or they may work on teacher-designed activities. As our teacher team becomes more familiar with the needs of each child, the workload adapts week to week. Here, Mrs. D’Aiutolo helps our grade 5 students, Morgan and Dinara, with math problems.

Horizons at Harley wouldn’t be complete without our swimming program. We are deeply thankful to Coach Mancuso for finding staff and helping us provide swim lessons. This week grades 1, 2, and 3 all began their day with their favorite part of the program, jumping in the pool!

We look forward to seeing everyone next weekend!

Support Horizons:

A child that participates in Horizons year-round, receives an additional 40 days of schooling per year, and more than 95% of our students graduate high school on time.
