Horizons Saturday School - Week 2

Hi Everyone,

Horizons Saturday School (HSS) returned for our second weekend and students were once again treated to a range of tutoring and enrichments.

Check out some highlights from this weekend…

This week Jonathan Ntheketha, Harley’s new DEI educator, brought his love of theater to our program. For the last 20 years, Jonathan, who holds a degree in theater and education, has been a regular on the Rochester stage and he brought high energy and passion to his group of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. The purpose of the activity was to develop public speaking skills and have more than a little fun...as the picture below attests! Many thanks to Jonathan.

The key component of the Horizons program is our relationship with the Harley School itself. It’s not just space that the school provides. From the First Line Scholarship to Harley high schoolers volunteering in the summer, the two programs provide a wonderful opportunity for students to connect. We have a number of Harley students that have volunteered to provide support throughout the next six-weeks. This past weekend Roman Novy-Marx worked with students on how to open bank accounts and an introduction to budgeting. That he did this before jumping on a bus to NYC for a soccer game was equally impressive! Thank you Roman.

We were once again excited to have full use of the pool and Mr. Mancuso and his team provided exceptional swim instruction for 1st,4th,5th and 6th graders. Making sure that all Horizons participants are competent swimmers has been a cornerstone of the program for the past twenty-seven summers. Among our younger participants especially, swimming remains the most popular part of the day!

Support Horizons:

Consider this...a child that attends Horizons and Saturday School from Kindergarten-8th grade will have received an additional two years of schooling before high school entry. That’s how we make a difference. Our program is entirely funded through the support of individuals, businesses and foundations. People like you! Sincerely,
