In Memoriam: Joseph Briggs

It is with great sadness that we learned of Joe’s passing.

Joe and Nancy Briggs have been a great inspiration to all our community. They have been steadfast supporters of education for disadvantaged children. In the mid-1990s, Joe and Nancy provided a foundational grant to establish the Horizons at Harley program. Through the years the Horizons students and program have flourished. Then, in 2009, Joe and Nancy and their dear friends, David, and Shirley Kearns, provided another foundational grant to expand high-quality summer learning to more educational institutions. Using Horizons at Harley as the model, by 2020 more than 20 institutions had joined the effort. Over the years more than 9,000 summer learning scholarships have been awarded to thousands of school children. The children return summer after summer helping them to succeed in school and in life. The promise is “to instill in our students a belief in their abilities, an understanding of their potential for achievement, and a joyous spirit of optimism about the future”. Joe and Nancy have played a pivotal role in the lives of many, many Rochester area children.
